Welcome and setup

Before any code: what we are building, in plain English

Welcome! Before we open an editor, a quick picture. A network server is just two programs sharing a phone line. One side speaks, the other listens. Redis is one of those programs. By the end of this course you have written your own version of it, one short file at a time. No frameworks, no magic, just plain Python.

The whole network in one picture

A client sends bytes. A server reads bytes and replies with bytes. Everything else is built on top.

The reference repo is github.com/learnwithparam/build-your-own-redis-python. Each step there is a folder, and the difference between two folders is the new idea you are about to learn.

By the end you have a working stand-in for Redis. It speaks the real Redis language, remembers data after a restart, fans messages out to many subscribers, and a backup machine quietly mirrors it. All of it is plain Python you can read in an evening.

The build, end to end

Ten steps. Each adds exactly one architectural idea.
terminal
bash
git clone https://github.com/learnwithparam/build-your-own-redis-python.git
cd build-your-own-redis-python
make install
make test

Clone, install, and run the test suite to verify your environment.

make test should print 'Results: 155/155 passed'. If anything fails, fix it before moving on. The test suite is structural, it does not require any servers running.
